Abstract

Technological advancement has shaped the communication patterns of Generation Alpha, who are highly familiar with digital interactions but are increasingly vulnerable to a decline in the quality of face-to-face social interactions. This study aims to describe the process of interpersonal communication between facilitators at Rumah Baca Bhayangkara Bahari and Generation Alpha children in Kampung Laut Jambi, as well as to identify the barriers encountered during the process. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The analysis is grounded in William Schutz’s FIRO (Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation) theory, which emphasizes three main dimensions: inclusion, control, and affection. The findings reveal that facilitators play a crucial role in fostering warm, inclusive, and supportive interpersonal communication, which encourages reading interest and emotional closeness among the children. However, several obstacles were identified, including the children’s psychological barriers, differences in communication styles, limited learning environments, and the unique characteristics of Generation Alpha. This study recommends the importance of interpersonal communication training for facilitators and the creation of literacy spaces that are more adaptive to the emotional and social needs of children living in coastal areas.
